The Discovery of Calculus

Discovered or Invented?

June 29, 2017

"The Discovery of Calculus" Oil and acrylic on paper, 14"x17".

When I made this, I was thinking about ideas, and how they break through into our thoughts. Also I was thinking about Math, and other ways of organizing ideas. They change the way we encounter the world. They can encourage or bully our way of thinking.

Courage and Compassion

Courage and Compassion

February 7, 2016

Oil on Canvas, 36"x36". In my most recent abstract paintings, I always begin by asking a question. It can be a big philosophical thought, or a very mundane issue about the daily grind. My mind meanders over the question and I look at the small paintings I picked at random for this piece. (see some of the small images in the Chance Operations section of our website) Then I try to work out how these seemingly unrelated images might come together in a composition. Simultaneously, I try to reach widely to ideas around the edges of the question in hopes of finding a new solution. Eventually, the palette and shapes become their own response to the question. Plus, it really helps clear my mind.

More Sketchbooks

A few still life sketches from a while back.  I haven’t been doing these as much lately but I’m reminded here of how quick they are, and how good for the skills.

I’m finding now that the kids are home for summer vacation - quick studies fit my schedule better than big paintings.  (Or so I keep telling those big white canvases in the hall.)

Rose Sky over High Rock Street

I just dropped a bunch of paintings off at the Page Waterman Gallery in Wellesley.  I don’t know exactly which ones they’ll take, but Elizabeth immediately picked this one as her favorite.  It is 36” x 48, mixed media and oil on canvas.

Stop in to the gallery if you get a chance.  They also do a beautiful job with framing.

This is a study (16” x 20” oil on canvas).  I’m preparing to paint a large version for a really great client of mine.  The client built the interior space behind the glass wall (it’s the Sports Club LA at the Ritz Carleton in Boston).  My client wants to hang the painting in their new office along with another they commissioned last fall.  I’ll post the final and their website (which I’m also designing) when both are finished.  It is so nice to work for people who really care about aesthetics.

This oil painting is 30” x 40”. During Open Studios last spring, I was commissioned to do a smaller (24” x 36”) version of this. It was really fun revisiting the composition.  I bought two bigger canvases as well with the intention of doing something similar, but we went to the Cape and I was seduced by the light down there. Now, I’m not sure if I will do this or something a bit more free-form like the night climbing series.
